Homelessness

Homelessness is a social crisis in the United States. Homelessness is the circumstance when people are without a permanent dwelling, such as a house or apartment. People who are homeless are most often unable to acquire and maintain regular, safe, secure and adequate housing due to a lack of, or a steady income.

The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development acknowledges four categories of people who qualify as legally homeless: (1) those who are currently homeless, (2) those who will become homeless in the imminent future, (3) certain youths and families with children who suffer from home instability caused by a hardship, and (4) those who suffer from home instability caused by domestic violence.

In 2013 there were an estimated 57,849 homeless veterans estimated in the United States (12 percent of all homeless adults).  Texas, California and Florida have the highest numbers of unaccompanied homeless youth under the age of 18, comprising 58% of the total homeless under 18 youth population.  At least 70% to 85% of all homeless are men.

In 2016 in Broward County 2,302 people were homeless. Only 1,520 were sheltered while the other 782 lived on the streets; on park benches, in trees, and even under bridges. Majority of the homeless were over the age of 24, males, black, and had a substance abuse disorder.

  • 3% were Over 24
  • 7% were Males
  • 6% were Black
  • 3% had a Substance Abuse Disorder

WHAT CAN WE DO?

There are so many organizations and groups to help the homeless, even right here in Broward County.  Our goal is not to replace any organizations in Broward County that are serving the homeless population.  Our goal is not to house people who are homeless and looking for shelter.

OUR GOAL IS:

  • To come along-side other organizations that are helping the homeless and add to what they are already doing in Broward County.
  • To focus on northern Broward County (Deerfield Beach & Pompano Beach).
  • To provide meals and clothes to those living on the streets.
  • To meet the first Saturday of every month at 11:00 am at CLF Church 801 SE 10th Street, Deerfield Beach, FL 33441 to go out into the community to deliver food and clothes.
  • To collect donations of food, clothing, supplies, and finances to continue this project.
  • To assist with resources of names and addresses of local food banks and shelters that are available.
  • To help those that have found themselves in a bad situation and just need so compassion and love.

If you have a desire to get involved in any way at all our doors are always open for more volunteers.  You can help by donating your time, your talents, and your treasure (that’s money – LOL).  You can donate your time and come help us any Saturday you choose.  You can donate food or clothes anytime.  You can make a financial donation on our website.  All donations are tax-deductible.
